When Android device owners get a free software update scheduled for later this year, new features could be in store, along with app performance updates and privacy and security enhancements. Google is reportedly testing a new feature that will automatically turn off the screen when the device is not in use.
Previously covered by 9to5Google, the new feature called “adaptive timeout” would use sensors like proximity detectors to determine if the user is using the phone. The publication reported that the new feature has been added to Android testing software, but it doesn’t appear to be live yet.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the feature. The company said earlier this week that it had achieved “platform stability,” meaning that its planned new developer programming features, including improvements to battery life and app performance, were complete before release.

Google’s move to add small but notable new tweaks and features to its Android software follows a longstanding pattern of companies tweaking their products during extensive testing before release. Apple has similarly added and removed features from its testing software in response to feedback or because it couldn’t implement them as intended within its self-imposed deadlines.
Companies sometimes make significant changes to software during public testing. Microsoft in particular removed one of Copilot Plus PC’s key features just before it hit store shelves this week. Just days before the launch, Microsoft said it wouldn’t include a Recall feature designed to combine regular screenshots with artificial intelligence to help users navigate back to documents, apps and websites more easily. Privacy and security experts worried that Recall could pose a serious risk to users, leading Microsoft to spend more time testing the technology and tackling security.
Google is expected to continue public testing of the Android 15 software through the summer, after which it will send the final version to manufacturers such as Samsung, OnePlus, Nothing, Motorola, etc. Last October, Google offered the Android 14 software update for free to owners of Pixel smartphones.
