Google tests Android bottom search bar redesign, introduces three key elements to ensure consistency

Google is once again tinkering with the design of its apps for Android users. The latest experiments include a redesign of the bottom search bar. This feature was first introduced in 2021 and then improved in late 2023. This time, Google is testing a redesign of Material 3’s bottom bar with an integrated search field.

A lucky user came across this redesigned bottom bar while using Google Search on Android. This update incorporates Material 3 elements, including the pill-shaped TabHe indicator, previously seen in the iOS version but abandoned on Android after a brief appearance. The reintroduction of these design elements is aimed at making Google apps more consistent across platforms, he said, 9to5Google reported.

Enhanced search experience: Addressing user concerns

Above the bottom bar is the vertical search field that was previously exclusive to the top section of the Discover feed. In the current redesign, this search field still appears on search results pages, but some users find its size somewhat exaggerated. Despite potential concerns about space usage, the redesign eliminates the need for the “Google” logo at the top and instead provides quick access to search filters.

The default blue hue replaces the Dynamic Color feature and provides a more noticeable contrast to search results pages. Overall, this bottom search bar redesign gives Google apps a fresher, more modern look, eliminating concerns about an outdated look.

Monetized Search Generation Experience (SGE)

In other news, Google is considering monetizing its Search Generative Experience (SGE) feature. Launched about a year ago, SGE provides users with an AI-powered search experience. Initially available through Search Labs, recent reports suggest that Google is considering the option of including certain AI-powered search features in its premium subscription service.

This move could make SGE part of the $19.99 Google One AI premium tier alongside Gemini Advanced. However, Google is adamant that it has no plans to remove ads from the regular Google search experience. A decision regarding the launch of this subscription-based model is still pending, with Google executives considering various options, including offering certain SGE features to free users.
