Google is taking further steps to protect users from financial fraud by piloting enhanced fraud protection in Play Protect.
Last year, Google announced a new feature in Play Protect that prompts users to scan for unknown Android apps before sideloading them. Now, Google is taking further steps to protect users from financial fraud by piloting enhanced fraud protection in Play Protect.
In this pilot program, Play Protect automatically protects app installations from internet sideloading sources such as web browsers, messaging apps, and file managers that request sensitive runtime permissions commonly used for financial fraud. will be analyzed and blocked. These permissions include RECEIVE_SMS, READ_SMS, BIND_Notifications, and Accessibility, and can be exploited by fraudsters to intercept one-time SMS or notification-based passwords and view on-screen content.
The initiative is being rolled out through Google Play Services and will launch in the coming weeks for Android users in Singapore. When an app is blocked by Play Protect, the user is told, “This app may request access to sensitive data, which may increase the risk of identity theft or financial fraud.” An explanation will be displayed.
Google worked with the Cyber Security Authority of Singapore (CSA) to test and refine this enhanced fraud prevention feature to ensure its effectiveness in the fight against financial fraud.

Up-to-date guidance is available to help developers address potential issues with their apps, and provides instructions for filing a dispute if necessary.
Meanwhile, Google’s real-time scanning capabilities within Play Protect are already having a significant impact on the safety of users in regions such as India, Thailand, Singapore, and Brazil. The scans identified 515,000 new malicious apps and issued more than 3.1 million warnings or blocks, contributing to a safer app ecosystem for Android users around the world.
