Google One’s VPN, one of Google’s best mobile services, will be phased out later this year. This service is what I personally use all the time to protect my data, access great deals, and watch global content across major streaming services.
First released in 2020, Google One’s VPN has offered subscribers an “additional layer of online protection” for Android (and later iPhone) devices. Google One is the company’s premium cloud storage option that offers access to Gemini AI, exclusive Google Store discounts, and advanced Google Photo editing tools for just $2 per month or $19.99 per year.
VPN with Google One: Gone too soon
VPN with Google One was a key feature of this subscription, at least for me. A VPN is essential for connecting to Wi-Fi when you’re on the go, as it can mask your connection and protect your data from unscrupulous parties trying to spy on your device’s traffic. It’s also a great tool for getting around geo-restricted content on streaming services and finding great deals online with region-specific sales.
While it doesn’t offer all the extra features of one of the best VPNs, it was a great addition to Google’s offering. This is one of the most interesting selling points of the Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, and Pixel Fold, and Google promised to make the tool available for free for five years.
Sadly, my enjoyment of this tool doesn’t seem to have been shared by many others, and Google plans to shut down the service later this year, according to 9to5Google, who says it’s “just a matter of people using it It was discovered that the company was not using the equipment, so they plan to cut their losses.
Thankfully, eligible Pixel owners will still have that five-year promise, but users who utilize the feature on other Android devices or iPhones will have to rely on third-party alternatives once the tool ends. You will be redirected.
Enjoy peace of mind with VPN with Google One. We hardly knew you.
