Google Photos announced “Photo Stacks” in November, and after first debuting on iOS, it’s now starting to roll out on Android.
Updated on 2/23: Version 6.71 of Google Photos for Android expands the automatic grouping stack more broadly. A new overflow menu will appear next to the first checkmark in the photo grid. “Stack similar photos”[設定]>[環境設定]But you can easily turn it on/off.
Google Photos now also offers an alternative way to pinch in and out of the photo grid using the layout picker (Comfort, Day, Month). Be sure to update to the latest version on the Play Store and “force stop” from the app information menu.
Original 1/22: To “organize similar photos taken together” over a “short period of time”, Google automatically groups your photos so that only one image appears in the main grid.[写真]The tab will display a number and icon in the top right corner of the thumbnail to indicate that this has occurred.
When you open a group, all the images appear in a carousel that you can swipe through. The 2×2 button on the front of the bottom “filmstrip” allows you to view everything as a grid. Options let you set different top picks, remove photos from your collection, or clean up your library by keeping some and deleting all others.
Google leverages AI in Photo Stacks with a vertical three-dot menu (horizontal on iOS) to quickly enable and disable “Stacks of Similar Photos.”
On the other hand, when you share or add a stack to an album, you can only select “Selected items only” (top selection only) or “Include photo stack” (all).
You can also “Unstack Entire Photo Stack” to view photos individually in the main grid by long-pressing a photo stack and tapping “Unstack Photos.”
Google first brought Photo Stacks to iOS, and now it’s starting to come to Android as well, but it’s not widely available yet.
