What you need to know

  • Google plans to discontinue the VPN service included in Google One subscriptions.
  • The company announced that it was removing Google One VPN because it was found to be underutilized.
  • Notably, Pixel owners and Google Fi subscribers will still have access to the included VPN service.

Google bundles several virtual private network (VPN) services with others, one of which will soon be discontinued. Google One VPN, the VPN service included in all Google One subscription tiers, will be retired in the coming months. Fortunately, the company won’t make any changes to other VPNs it offers through other programs, such as Pixel smartphone purchases or Google Fi cell phone plans.

The move was communicated to Google One subscribers on Thursday, April 11, in an email seen by Android Authority. “Focused on delivering the most in-demand features and benefits, he will discontinue free shipping on some print orders from Google Photos starting May 15th and discontinue VPN with Google One later this year. ” says the email.

Google’s idea for Google One VPN was to power their subscription service while meeting their privacy needs on the web. This feature was originally a benefit of Google One premium plans, but has been available to all Google One plans since early last year. But the feature wasn’t all that popular, at least according to Google.

The company is “retiring the VPN feature” [it] A statement provided to 9to5Google found that people simply weren’t using it.

Google reiterated the need to shift focus to features that Google One subscribers can get the most out of. This is the same reason the company gave when it decided to remove 17 features from Google Assistant in January.

Unsurprisingly, Google is sticking to its original promise to owners of phones starting with the Pixel 7 series. These devices include a separate VPN service called Pixel VPN for five years. Even if Google One VPN ends, you can still use Pixel VPN. In fact, Google is extending Pixel VPN to run on the Pixel 7 series and Pixel Fold without requiring the Google One app. The feature first appeared on his Pixel 8 series, and will be coming to older devices in June.

VPNs included with Google Fi cell phone plans are also unaffected. That said, there are still several ways to use VPN services through Google. However, those who rely on Google One VPN and don’t have the new Pixel or Google Fi services will need to switch to another provider.
