What you need to know

  • Google One has reached a major milestone with over 100 million paid members.
  • The milestone underscores Google’s strategy to lure users away from free plans and scale back its free storage offerings in recent years.
  • Coincidentally, Google One’s subscriber milestone coincides with YouTube Music and YouTube Premium both passing the notable 100 million user mark.

Google One has reached a major milestone with over 100 million paid members.

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone on X (formerly Twitter). He also hinted at leveraging this success by introducing a new Google One AI premium plan.

Google One has surpassed 100 million subscribers. We’re building on that momentum with our new AI Premium plan (launched yesterday), which will soon bring Gemini Advanced and other AI features like Gmail, Docs, and more to Gemini. https://t.co/m7zAVop7P6 pic.twitter.com/sMdwJeq0iUFebruary 9, 2024

Since its launch in May 2018, this cloud storage subscription service has provided users with additional storage for Google services such as Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail. It also adds additional features such as VPN and dark web monitoring.

Reaching this milestone highlights Google’s efforts to wean users away from its free plan. The company has been scaling back its free storage benefits in recent years, most notably removing unlimited storage for Google Photos in 2021.

Currently, each Google Account is entitled to 15 GB of benefits, all in total. So if you’re importing memories from Google Photos or piling up documents from Google Drive, your 15 GB can fill up faster than you’d like.

Google One plans start at just $1.99 per month and get 100 GB of storage. If you’re feeling fancy, drop $9.99 and get a whopping 2TB.

But Google isn’t done spoiling you. The search giant just released an “AI Premium” Google One plan packed with AI tricks for $19.99 per month. This upgrade adds AI features such as drafting emails in Gmail, shaping them into slides, and arranging spreadsheets with data visualization.

If you have a plan with 5 TB or more of storage, you can try these AI Premium benefits for free until July 31, 2024.

Google One’s achievement of this subscriber milestone aligns perfectly with YouTube Music and YouTube Premium recently surpassing the same impressive 100 million user mark.
