To celebrate reaching 1 billion RCS users at the end of 2023, Google announced a series of new features for Google Messages. Some of these, such as photomoji, reaction effects, and voice moods, are already available to users in certain regions of the world. And now, it looks like Screen Effects is slowly rolling out to users in the beta channel.
When Google announced Screen Effects in November 2023, the company said: “Screen Effects brings your messages to life with vivid animations, turning your words into dazzling visual displays.” When a user types a specific keyword or phrase, a full-screen animation appears. A few seconds with examples like “I love you” and “It’s snowing.”
Google says there are over 15 of these hidden prompt words. 9to5Google also notes that when you say “That’s nice,” you get a thumbs up animation, and when you say “Happy Valentine’s Day,” the screen fills with hearts and doves. They also pointed out that the phrase “it’s snowing” isn’t currently producing any effect.
At this stage, the rollout of “Screen Effects” appears to be progressing rather slowly, and the availability is quite limited. However, the feature has been confirmed on at least two phones, and a more comprehensive rollout is expected in the coming weeks and months.
As mentioned earlier, screen effects are just one of several new features coming to Google Messages. Other features on the list include:
- Photomoji – Google Ai on your device lets you turn your favorite photos into reactions.
- Audio Mood – Add visual effects to your audio messages. For example, add a fireball to show that you’re feeling angry.
- Custom Bubbles – Customize the color and background of your conversation bubbles.
- Reaction Effects – Use one of 10 popular emojis to automatically add additional animations to your messages.
- Animated Emoji – Add visual effects to your emojis.
- Profile – Easily change your profile name and photo to further customize your look.
Some of these features are not yet widely available. However, like screen effects, these are also expected to be gradually introduced in the coming months.
