Google Maps incident reporting becomes increasingly useless

Using navigation apps when you’re out and about is something almost everyone does these days, but these apps can help you do more than just get directions from point A to point B. Google Maps has supported incident reporting for quite some time, but going forward, this feature is becoming neglected and virtually useless.

This issue of 9to5Google Weekender is part of 9to5Google’s relaunched newsletter, highlighting the biggest stories at Google with commentary and other trivia. Sign up here to get emails delivered to your inbox faster.

Google Maps first introduced support for incident reports in 2019. This feature allowed users to report speed traps and accidents, and was quickly expanded to include more incidents and obstacles, such as construction and lane closures. This is a very useful idea since Maps is one of the most used apps.

But almost five years later, this feature feels like a waste.

Google Maps Incident Reporting allows users to submit these reports while traveling on the road through a small menu on the right side of the display. It’s quick and easy, but only Works from your phone’s display. If you’re using your phone to view your navigation, it’s quick and easy to access, but it’s becoming increasingly frustrating.

As we move forward and more people get new cars, Android Auto and CarPlay are becoming commonplace on the road. These systems bring important apps from your smartphone to your car’s display. Apps are usually safer to use and easier to look at. But for some reason, Google Maps continues to ignore incident reports on these platforms. He first brought this feature to our attention at the end of 2019, and it remains the same today. still It hasn’t been extended to Android Auto or CarPlay, but there doesn’t seem to be a good reason for that yet.

Waze, on the other hand, will continue to support reporting options on both platforms. Waze recently revamped its reporting features, and the update was immediately rolled out to Android Auto and CarPlay users.

Without the support of these platforms, reporting incidents on Google Maps would be a slow, painful, and unnecessary death. Waze is always going to have a more active community of drivers creating these reports, as that’s the main focus of the app, but it’s also important to note that the Maps experience that more and more people are actually using in their cars Google’s decision not to support this feature simply leaves features fading into the background. If fewer people use it, fewer people will even know about it in the first place. Besides, the phone experience isn’t getting any better, it’s probably just getting worse.

Google just refreshed Bard as Gemini last week, followed by the next generation release of the Gemini model. “Gemini 1.5” is a major update to the model with a larger context window and dramatically upgraded functionality.

Google One is making some changes

Several changes have been made to Google One following last week’s debut of a new “AI Premium” tier. This includes, firstly, the fact that new subscribers can no longer easily sign up for his 200GB subscription tier. This option still exists, but you’ll need to sign up for a 100 GB or 2 TB plan first and then adjust your subscription from there.

We also reported that Google One is working towards a new “all-in-one” subscription that includes Nest Aware, but it’s still unclear when that will be.
