A new Android Auto update that enhances the navigation experience with 3D buildings is now rolling out to more cars.
9to5Google noticed that Android Auto now shows 3D buildings and the feature is turned on by default. Unlike his Google Maps on your phone, where you manually switch between 3D buildings, Android Auto only shows off the buildings from the start.
For more than a decade, Google Maps has shown 3D buildings in selected cities, and you can toggle them on. But until now, these features didn’t work when getting from point A to point B.
This immersive view is a game changer, especially when exploring a new city. This was available in the Maps app on Android and iOS, but Android Auto didn’t have this feature until today.
However, according to 9to5, Android Auto’s 3D buildings only seem to pop up when in light mode. They disappear when you turn on dark mode. However, if you switch back to light mode (assuming it’s an option in your car), the 3D buildings will appear again. Interestingly, when this feature was first removed, these 3D buildings were still hanging around in dark mode.
While it doesn’t completely change Google Maps navigation, the inclusion of 3D buildings is pretty nifty, especially when navigating around the city. The building outlines are to scale and transparent, so you won’t be completely obscured by the busy city skyscrapers as you move.
If you want to disable 3D buildings, go to Google Maps settings and toggle the switch to turn off the feature.
