Google confirms “AR announcement” scheduled for May

Google I/O 2024 will be held on May 14th, and the company has confirmed that it will include an “AR announcement.”

The company is expected to reveal more details about the Android XR platform it is developing for Samsung’s next headset.

Early last year, Samsung officially announced the development of its XR headset, with Google handling the system software via a new version of Android and Qualcomm providing the chipset. Three months ago, Qualcomm confirmed that this chip is his Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, a high-end version of the base XR2 Gen 2 used in Meta Quest 3.

Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 announced for Samsung headsets and more

Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, a high-end version of the chipset used in the Quest 3.

At last year’s I/O, Google said it would “share more” about the Android XR and Samsung partnership later that year, but that never happened.

This may be because Samsung reportedly delayed and redesigned the headset in response to the Apple Vision Pro announcement just a month later, which appears to have exceeded expectations. . This may also have caused Google to redesign or reconsider his Android XR.

Google recently asked Meta to switch its MetaQuest headsets to Android XR instead of its own MetaQuest OS, which is also based on Android, but Meta strongly refused.

Meta’s reaction can be attributed, at least in part, to the fact that this isn’t Google’s first Android-based XR platform for a standalone headset. Back in 2018, Google’s Daydream platform powered the $400 Lenovo Mirage Solo, but Daydream was discontinued less than two years later.

Late last year, UploadVR reported that Samsung had told developers it planned to launch in late 2024. However, this will be the company’s first standalone headset, so Samsung’s plans may change from then on until late 2024. At the time, we reached out to Samsung but did not receive a response.

Samsung’s Google-powered headset will be released in late 2024

Samsung’s Google-powered XR headset is expected to be available in very limited quantities in late 2024. Click here for details:

Samsung will be the first hardware manufacturer to adopt Android XR, but The Information reported that Google is also marketing Android XR to other hardware manufacturers. However, there are no reports yet that other companies have accepted it. Meanwhile, Meta has also been courting his hardware partners, most recently doing business with LG.

If there’s an announcement about XR at Google I/O on May 14th, we’ll bring you the news.
