BARCELONA: Google on Monday unveiled a series of generative AI updates, including integrating Google’s Gemini chatbot into Google’s Messages app on Android devices. Advanced features aimed at making these technologies more user-friendly were announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.
The Gemini chatbot in Google’s Messages app makes it easy to compose SMS and schedule meetings that sync with Google’s email and calendar services.
Generative AI is also being introduced to Google’s Android Auto platform for cars, where the underlying AI model summarizes text messages while Android Auto is connected to the infotainment unit of a moving vehicle. .
Gemini on Messages, the default messaging app for Google’s Pixel smartphones, will be available starting this week, Wear OS senior director of product and design John Renaldi said in a blog post.

Google also introduced accessibility features to the Lookout app, such as AI-generated captions, making it easier to create automated audio descriptions of on-screen content. This move reflects Samsung’s recent implementation of similar features in its Galaxy S24 smartphone series.
The company also enhanced the screen reading capabilities of Google Lens via Maps and extended the “Circle to Search” feature, originally found in Samsung’s S24 series, to the broader Android ecosystem.

Google joins Microsoft, Qualcomm, Amazon, and others in making a number of announcements around generative AI. For example, Microsoft announced AI-powered real-time voice call analytics for enterprises to prevent fraud on operator-initiated calls. The company has begun this fraud detection trial with UK-based British Telecom, with other expansions planned.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm announced AI Hub, giving developers access to over 75 AI models to create new applications for Snapdragon-powered devices, marking a major step forward in the availability of generative AI tools.
