Germany’s 605MW solar power plant is now Europe’s largest solar power plant

A 605 megawatt (MW) project in Germany has dethroned Spain’s solar power plant from the top spot to become Europe’s largest solar power plant.

Solar power plant developer MoveOn Energy plans to install an additional 45 MW of power on its own and connect it to the grid by summer 2024. From that point on, the solar power plant will be equipped with more than 1.1 million modules.

It is located on more than 500 hectares (1,230 acres) of the former Witznitz II open-pit lignite mine. It will generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 200,000 homes and avoid approximately 250,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Last year, a long-term power purchase agreement for approximately 600MW of clean energy in Vitznitz was agreed with Shell Energy Europe.

A bicycle path will be built around the Witznitz solar farm, and Hansainvest said in a statement that up to 10 hectares (25 acres) will initially be available for agricultural use.

The Spanish solar power plant that has now been moved to the second slot is the 500MW Nuñez de Balboa project in Extremadura.
