Google rolled out its artificial intelligence chatbot in several different ways, starting with Bard and eventually rebranding it to Gemini. However, even after switching to Gemini, the chatbot still appeared in different ways on iOS and Android. Android users now get the Gemini app that can replace her Google Assistant on flagship phones, and iPhone users can now access Gemini through their existing Google app. Now, a leaked version of the Google app aims to bring similar functionality to Android.
Android tipster Assemble debugging in X We discovered an unreleased toggle in the Google app for Android that allows users to switch between Google Search and Gemini. This feature is not publicly available yet, but probably got working after AssembleDebug toggled some developer flags. After opening the Google app, users still see the main Google Search tab by default. Also known as the “Discover” feed, it suggests articles and content from around the web. At the top center of the screen, you’ll see a new toggle that lets you switch between Google Search and Gemini. This can make a huge difference in whether a user’s query is returned with search results or Gemini’s AI model of her. Apart from the functionality changes, switching between Search and Gemini changes the entire user interface of Google apps.
Tapping the Gemini icon at the top of the screen transforms the Google app to mimic the standalone Gemini app. Gemini’s text box is now available, and like any other instance of Gemini, it also accepts voice-to-text input and photo uploads. The app also shows examples of questions that Gemini can answer, and displays recent chat history.
Google has been experimenting with Gemini in several places, most recently adding the chatbot to the beta version of Google Messages. It looks like the regular Google app will be getting Gemini functionality next, giving Android users more ways to access chatbots. It may seem redundant at first glance on Android, considering there is a standalone Gemini app. However, the Gemini app automatically replaces Google Assistant, so the Google app may work as an alternative.
Unfortunately, that’s not guaranteed. AssembleDebug told Android Authority that using Gemini in Google apps will continue to prompt Android users to replace their Google Assistant with her AI chatbot.
It’s unclear when Gemini will be generally available in Google apps, but it’s clear that it’s in active development. Similar functionality has been available to a limited number of iOS users since Gemini’s rebranding.
