In February, Google announced that Gemini AI was coming to Google Messages. At the time, the feature was only accessible on Pixel 6 and newer devices, Pixel Fold, Samsung Galaxy S22 and newer, and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold.
As first spotted by 9to5Google, Google has now lifted that restriction, and Gemini AI will be coming to all Android devices. The feature appears to be rolling out gradually, so if you’re not seeing it now, you should be seeing it soon.
To access Gemini AI, open Google Messages and tap “Start Chat.” Select Gemini from the top of your contact list, follow the instructions, and you’ll be prompted to type in what you’re looking for.

“Chat with Gemini in the Google Messages app to compose messages, brainstorm ideas, plan events, or just have a fun conversation,” Google explains.
What can Gemini AI in Google Messages do? Let’s take a closer look.
1. Suggest a recipe
Stuck for dinner ideas? Ask Gemini for a recipe based on ingredients you have on hand. I asked what I could make with chicken and black beans, and the AI quickly returned a delicious-looking, easy-to-make dish. The recipe included an ingredient I didn’t have, but when I told the AI, it adjusted the recipe. You can request a vegetarian recipe, ask for a beginner recipe, or look for a kid-friendly recipe. Let’s hope it doesn’t suggest a recipe for glue pizza or gasoline spaghetti.
2. Write a text message
I asked Gemini to write a text to a friend, explaining that it was their birthday and that I hadn’t seen them in a long time. Gemini replied, “Happy birthday.” [friend name]It’s been too long! Have a great day and see you soon! I asked my Gemini to “make it funny” and he replied “Happy Birthday!” [friend name]I just realized I haven’t seen you in ages, like, in the fossil record. Let’s fix that right now! Here’s a treat for you (you’re an adult now).”
3. Plan your itinerary
Planning a trip to New York City in the fall, I asked Gemini for a list of five must-see places. The AI quickly responded with a list of must-see places, complete with photos. I asked the AI to “artistically” my list, and it changed all my must-see places to museums and shows. I then asked it to change back to the original list, but it gave me back the shortened version because it was only a weekend. Since I had already made plans, the list Gemini presented wasn’t new information, but if I hadn’t, it would be a great starting point. I asked for recommendations for my hometown, Charlotte, North Carolina, and the list I got would certainly make a great itinerary.
4. Create the code
I admit I know absolutely nothing about coding, but when I asked Gemini about its coding capabilities, it told me it could handle simple scripts in Python or Javascript to automate simple tasks, or use specific code snippets to generate functions or classes based on your description, or pseudocode to represent steps if you’ve yet to outline the logic behind your code. “The code I generate may need some tweaking or modification,” the AI warned.

Google says that the results are taken from Google Search and the answers are based on the latest current events. If the answer is not good enough, you can ask for a better answer. The AI will answer with almost certainty. You can also ask Gemini to completely redo the answer if you don’t like the output.
5. Get book recommendations
If you’re looking for your next favorite book, ask Gemini for help. I told it the title of a book I enjoyed, “Devil in the White City,” and asked for similar recommendations. The AI recommended another book by the same author, which was no surprise. But it realized it was a historical true crime story, and recommended a few books I hadn’t heard of yet. All with cover photos, I could judge a book by its cover.
6. Write anything
In addition to text messages, Gemini AI can create almost any written content: a poem on a specific topic, a song about something, an email to a colleague about a sensitive topic, anything! If you need help writing something, Gemini can write it all for you, give you an outline to get started, or brainstorm ideas if you’re not sure where to start.
7. Just chat
Besides being productive, you can also use Gemini AI for friendly chats. When I said I just wanted to chat, Gemini asked me what I wanted to talk about. When the conversation turned to books and I mentioned that I liked Edgar Allan Poe, Gemini actually remembered our previous chat where I said I was going to New York and told me I could visit his house in New York. If you’re looking for something to do, chatting with Gemini AI is a fun way to kill time.

Of course, this is not a complete list. Anything you can ask an AI like ChatGPT to do, you can ask the Gemini AI to do. There’s a good chance you could get a little help planning a theme party, writing a message, finding new movies to watch, creating word puzzles for the classroom, or any other idea you can think of.
