BICHOLIM: Former chairman Rajaram Gaonkar and Kundan Farari are the frontrunners for the Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) chairmanship.
According to sources, Gaonkar, who was elected from ward 11, has served as BMC chairman for three consecutive terms, including the previous term, and is likely to vie for the top position.
However, some senior BJP leaders support the change and are likely to support Kudan Farali, who was elected from the 13th ward with a landslide margin of 392 votes. He also served as vice chairman in the previous term.
Riaz Beg from ward 9 and Tanuja Gaonkar from ward 12 are also vying for the vice-chairperson post. Mr. Tanuja has been elected for the past four terms, and Mr. Beg was the vice-chairman last term.
Sources said that if Mr. Farali becomes chairman, Mr. Rajaram’s wife, Tanuja, could be elected as vice-chairman.
Elections for both posts will be held on April 1st.
The BJP has nine members in the 14-member council. Furthermore, the party’s strength increased to 10 seats as 5th Ward MP Naresh Topple, who was elected as an independent, extended his support to the BJP.
