Frisco has launched a new Waste Reduction Business Grant to encourage Frisco businesses to foster innovation around waste reduction.

The grant was facilitated by the passage of an ordinance aimed at reducing waste within the town. The ordinance includes a ban on polystyrene takeout containers. Abolition of single-use plastic bottles. A request-only requirement for single-use takeout items and a requirement for paper bags made from 100% recycled materials.

Grants are up to $10,000 and are awarded periodically throughout the year. According to the town, the application will include details about the project, how the company plans to complete the project or program, a timeline, and how the project will help Frisco meet its waste reduction goals. He said an explanation must be included.

Once a company receives approval for the project listed in its grant application, it can receive reimbursement of its costs, provided it provides proof of expenditures. No grant will be issued without proof of expenditure.

The maximum award amount is $10,000, but smaller awards and partial funding for projects are also possible.

Small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and educational institutions located within Frisco’s jurisdiction are eligible to apply. All applicants must have a valid Frisco business license.

Potentially eligible projects include installing publicly accessible water points, purchasing reusable items to support the transition from single-use to reusable items, and sustainability efforts that businesses are already implementing. Possibilities include expanding programs, composting infrastructure/projects, etc. , to fund educational programs.

Other innovative ideas are also encouraged.

Projects that are not eligible include purchasing reusable bags, recycling services, and purchasing take-out containers and supplies.

New ordinances and other changes

Ordinance establishing prohibition Regulations on the use of polystyrene takeaway containers such as hinged boxes, trays, bowls and cups came into effect on January 1st. If a company purchased its expanded polystyrene products before January 1, 2024, it can continue to use its remaining expanded polystyrene products. We will hold your inventory until it runs out.

Towards a ban on plastic bottlesbusinesses will need to source water packaged in more recyclable containers, such as water in aluminum cans, glass containers, or paper/wax packs.

“Skip things” The ordinance requires single-use takeout items such as plastic utensils, packaged condiments, paper napkins, stirrers, straws and lids to be provided only upon request. This plastic reduction initiative has an immediate impact. Restaurants may offer self-service stations where customers can select their own take-home items. Certain consumables used by third-party delivery services, such as cup lids, spill plugs, and trays. Used to prevent spills and safely deliver food and beverages.

Frisco also updated its baggage fee program To better align with Colorado’s Plastic Pollution Reduction Act. This change concerns how much of baggage fees companies can keep. Under the previous ordinance, businesses could cover 50% of the cost of disposable bags, up to a maximum of $100 per month. Under the new ordinance, 40% of baggage fees collected by businesses will be retained without a cap, and the remaining 60% will be remitted to the town. The minimum transfer amount is $20 per quarter. If a company’s remittance balance is less than $20, we will hold the remittance until it exceeds $20 and remit it within the quarter.

Previously, companies were only allowed to offer paper bags made from at least 40% post-consumer recycled material. The new ordinance requires paper bags to be made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials. The $0.25 baggage fee will remain.

The new ordinance will allow Frisco to do more to plan, promote and implement recycling, composting and other waste reduction programs, including related outreach and education, including funding for new Frisco Waste Reduction Project Grants. You will be able to use the bag fee for any purpose. .
