SOUTH DAKOTA – Summer is just around the corner and there’s plenty to see and do in the Black Hills. Here we have listed some fun and interesting destinations to visit that won’t leave your wallet feeling light.

Storybook Island is a nonprofit children’s park with free admission between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and boasts a variety of statues and play areas that recreate the atmosphere of its namesake. Storybook Island is a must-see for families with young children and a nostalgic destination for those who are young at heart.

Admission is free. A concession stand, train, merry-go-round, and gift shop are all available on site.

The traditional Norwegian architecture of the hill chapel echoes the design of an 850-year-old stave church about 100 miles from Oslo. Other buildings on the property similarly replicate traditional Norwegian design. This spiritual place is the perfect place to relax and indulge in deep contemplation.

There is also a gift shop on site.

Dino

One of Rapid City’s most iconic landmarks, Dinosaur Park’s famous Brontosaurus can be seen from miles away. Visitors can get up close and personal with giant dinosaur statues and browse the park’s gift shop. Additionally, the nearby Skyline Drive Nature Preserve offers miles of trails with stunning views of the city below.

Canyon Lake Park

Canyon Lake Park is a traditional hub for locals looking to spend a day in the sun. The park’s various playgrounds, fields, ponds, and trails provide endless opportunities for the whole family to have fun, relax, and explore. The Leonard Swanson Memorial Pathway runs through Canyon Lake Park and along Rapid Creek across town to Founders Park, making it a great day trip for cyclists.

The Rapid City Outdoor Campus is a place where the public can learn everything there is to know about living in the great outdoors. The campus hosts interpretive programs and classes at scheduled times throughout the year. The location also has trails, an archery range, animal exhibits, and an aquarium for visitors to enjoy in between activities.

Downtown Rapid City is a very diverse area that can be explored on foot or by bike. Art Alley, Dahl Art Center, Susie Kappa Art Center, and Prairie Edge Art Gallery are all free to enter and within walking distance of Main Street Square. Life-sized statues of American presidents on many street corners make for great photo opportunities and useful landmarks.

Mount Rushmore Gold Factory Tour

Guests touring the Mount Rushmore Black Hills Gold Factory can see professional jewelers at work up close as they demonstrate processes such as lost wax casting, cutting diamonds, and even casting diamonds in gold ore.

Tours are free and can be booked weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Group tours are also possible.


South Dakota Air and Space Museum

  • The outdoor air park is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. As of May 18, 2024, the hangar is temporarily closed.






South Dakota Air and Space Museum

This aviation museum, affectionately known as the Warbird Sanctuary, is located just outside Ellsworth Air Force Base. This location’s aviation park features a dizzying array of historic and modern aircraft that make for stunning photo opportunities. His four hangars at this location feature exhibits on military technology, space travel, local aviation, and the history of the nearby Air Force base.

The Fish Hatchery is one of Spearfish’s most famous attractions and is essentially an aquarium where visitors can feed schools of trout and observe them up close through underwater windows. The museum on this site builds an interesting story about 20th century fish farm operations and the lifestyles of their owners and workers.

No one visiting Spearfish should miss this completely unique art gallery. An internationally acclaimed artist, Dick’s Termes specializes in paintings on spheres, and skillfully utilizes optical illusions to create self-contained paintings called Termespheres that depict three-dimensional space from all angles. Create an environment of type.

Thermosphere Gallery asks that you call ahead to reserve your visit. The gallery is free to enter and is open seven days a week.

Free Attractions in the Black Hills - Keystone Museum

Keystone Museum, located in Rapid City, South Dakota, is a historical museum with exhibits and artifacts related to the region’s mining heritage and the Black Hills Gold Rush.


Housed in Keystone’s historic school building, this museum takes visitors back in time through the town’s history. Exhibits include preserved classrooms, furniture from the pioneer family’s home, a photo gallery, and a section dedicated to Carrie Ingalls. little house on the prairie fame.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center

After the Northern Hemisphere’s deepest gold mine closed, its space was repurposed as the Sanford Underground Research Facility. The site’s visitor center is both a history museum and a science center, where guests can learn about the gold mine itself, the underground technology used at the facility, and the cosmic secrets being studied there.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is part of the hustle and bustle of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and is a must-see for motorcycle enthusiasts. This facility is both a museum and an art gallery, with rooms and halls lined with historic antiques, elaborately decorated custom bikes, and art depicting the exciting world of motorcycling.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

Friendship Tower on Mount Roosevelt offers some of the best views in the Black Hills. Climb the 31-foot tower’s steep steps to easily see Bear Butte, more than 27 miles away. Hiking up to the tower is a scenic experience in itself.
