Taylor Swift has not said a single word about the 2024 presidential election. But the mere prospect that the pop superstar might support President Biden has left conservatives at Fox News skeptical.
“Why would someone as popular as her alienate your Swifties fans?” Jeanine Pirro Said Before addressing the singer directly, a word about “The Five.” “So don’t get involved! Don’t get involved in politics! We don’t want to see you there!”
“Don’t believe everything Taylor Swift says,” one commentator, Charlie Arnolt, urged. “We are all asking you.”
And Sean Hannity took to his prime-time soapbox Tuesday evening to suggest that Democrats were leading Swift the wrong way. “Are Taylor aware that the men they want to support are some kind of stumbling, bumbling nuisance?” he asked.
“Maybe,” Hannity added. “She wants to think twice before she makes her decision about 2024.”
The unsolicited advice against Ms. Swift comes as supporters of former President Donald J. Trump adopt an increasingly conspiratorial worldview about Ms. Swift’s possible involvement in the presidential race, reported on FOX this week. Appeared on the news.
Right-wing activists believe that Ms. Swift’s romance with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, a sort of American couple of a football star and a wholesome pop icon, was a set-up orchestrated by the Democratic Party, or perhaps the National Party. They are indulging in groundless speculation that it might be a real thing. The football league aims to trick unsuspecting Americans into increasing viewership for November’s Super Bowl and voting for Mr. Biden.
A version of that theory aired on Fox News in mid-January, with host Jesse Watters saying, I got an idea Swift was a government agent engaged in psychological warfare. He suggested that the great success of her Elas concert tour was due to the support of the Department of Defense. “Have you ever wondered why and how she exploded like that?” Watters asked viewers. (He admitted there was no hard evidence: “If I knew, I would share it.”)
Kelsey was also the target of ridicule after Watters called him a “Pfizer sponsor” after he recorded an ad promoting Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine.
But comments this week by Hannity, Pirro and others discourage Swift, who boasts 279 million followers on Instagram, from throwing her cultural weight behind political candidates they hate. It was aimed at that. The on-air debate between the two was prompted in part by reports that the Biden campaign saw Swift, who supported Biden in 2020, as a champion of the presidential dream.
Arnold alarmedly told Fox anchor Martha McCallum that Swift had posted 35,000 new registrations after she encouraged fans to vote in a social media post. Arnold noted that even though Swift is on her private plane, “yet she’s always talking about climate change,” adding, “Voters need to be careful because she’s not a talk-talker.” ” he said. It was the kind of eco-scold that rarely airs on cable networks, where guests often express skepticism about global warming.
Mr. Hannity, who has publicly said he is “not a Swift fan,” on Tuesday drew a connection between Ms. Swift and one of Fox News’ popular boogeymen, financier and Democratic donor George Soros. He aired an old clip in which Ms. Swift said Mr. Soros’ son Alex helped fund the sale of her song catalog to producer Scooter Braun. “Does Taylor actually understand that the Soros are huge donors to left-wing and Democratic causes?” Hannity asked.
Guest Tomi Lahren suggested that Swift and Kelsey’s relationship will be less likely to support Biden because she is “spending some time with the public in Kansas City.” Lahren added: “The benefit to me is that she’ll probably keep quiet about politics. I think that’s the best thing we can ask for.”
Fox News contributor Charlie Hart, another “Hannity” guest, told viewers not to ignore the bizarre conspiracies surrounding Swift, saying, “The Biden cartel is pulling out all the stops and using everything at its disposal. There are many examples of people using it for everything.” as a weapon against the enemy. ”
The focus on Ms. Swift from the right is seen by some analysts as a misguided political strategy. “Republicans haven’t won the popular vote in 20 years, so now we’re trying a novel strategy: attacking one of the most beloved pop stars on the planet…and the NFL.” says Alyssa Farrar Griffin, a senior administration official and politician. Co-host of “The View” I wrote to X.
Not all mentions of Swift on Fox News are negative. On Brian Kilmeade’s Saturday show, he asked Fox Sports analyst Jay Glazer about the Swift phenomenon.
“She’s a genius at what she does,” Glaser replied. “The NFL is genius in the way they market things. There’s nothing better than this. There’s nothing hateful here. In my opinion, there’s only love there. ”
