I’ve talked a lot in recent months about why Apple needs to launch the iPhone Flip, and the latest rumors hint at an unpredictable future for the foldable iPhone. At the extreme, analysts monitoring this issue say, iPhone Flip may be permanently canceledThis follows an earlier report that it would be. Postponed until first quarter of 2027.
Apple is certainly a laggard in the foldable phone space, but I’m not surprised that the company is taking a cautious approach. Especially considering that a lot of resources seem to be going into the development and release of Apple Vision Pro. But while I’m perfectly fine with postponing the iPhone Flip, Apple can’t afford to take any more time before releasing the iPhone SE 4.
There’s a reason why the iPhone SE 2022, the third generation model in the series, remains on our list of best budget phones. But considering it’s been two years since its release, the iPhone has been aging for some time now, possibly weakening Apple’s market share in the budget phone space. Here’s why you should prioritize the iPhone SE 4 over any foldable iPhone that may be in the pipeline.
It is specified by a competitor
In the past few months alone, we’ve seen several new releases that rival the iPhone SE 2022 in terms of specs. Usually one year is enough for him to see differences between phones, but two years sees even more changes.
I’d like to point out the biggest thing people criticize about the iPhone SE 2022: the 60Hz display refresh rate. It’s very outdated at the moment as there are cheaper phones like the $299 Moto G Power 2024 with a 120Hz refresh rate.
You only have to flip the phone over and look at the single camera onboard to see how the current iPhone SE has better specs than its competitors. Don’t get me wrong. Its only 12MP camera still produces great photos (and portrait shots), but now we’re also seeing new phones like the Samsung Galaxy A35 with triple cameras.
Gradual performance improvements for new phones
Performance often improves incrementally, as quickly as cell phone specs improve within a year. Apple’s latest iPhones are proof of that, with both the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max delivering impressive CPU and GPU benchmark results. But the competition is fierce, and the third-generation iPhone SE definitely feels dated compared to the latest budget phones.
The OnePlus 12R, for example, shows just how dramatic a change can be in a sub-$500 phone. In our tests, the 2022 iPhone SE’s battery life reached his 9 hours and 5 minutes, but it pales in comparison to the OnePlus 12R’s 18 hours and 42 minutes. That’s double the battery life, so we could only imagine what benefits the fourth-generation iPhone SE could offer with new hardware and battery technology.
2 years was a long time to wait for the last update
We don’t know how Apple managed to keep the original iPhone SE in circulation for so long, but somehow it did so for four years before the second-generation iPhone SE was released in 2020. After that it only took a little while. The replacement period for iPhone SE (2022) is 2 years.
Two years after the launch of the 2022 model, Apple doesn’t have the luxury of another year (or two) to release a successor. The best iPhone deals often discount other recent iPhones to roughly the same out-of-pocket cost, so fewer people will likely buy the iPhone SE (2022) at that time. Apple currently sells the iPhone SE (2022) with 64GB of storage for $429, but when people find an iPhone 13 for about the same price (or less) on sale, they tend to buy it. It fades.
Apple’s competitors update their products every year and treat their budget phones like their flagship phones. Apple is unlikely to follow this strategy, but it has now reached a threshold where its phones are clearly too old to offer meaningful value unless they are heavily discounted.
Minimal resources required for development and release
Every company has its limits, and Apple is proof of that. Sure, it may seem like the company has a formula for regularly releasing new MacBooks, iPhones, and iPads, but we also wonder how thinly its resources will be spread. I’ve seen it. The Vision Pro is an example of what it takes to venture into an entirely new product category, while the reported demise of the Apple Car is a stark contrast that shows the limits of its resources.
Apple doesn’t need to invest a lot of time and resources into the next iPhone SE. Because just as the iPhone SE 2022 uses similar components to those found in the iPhone 13, it’s likely to be a reimagined iPhone 14. I think so. Also imagine that acquiring the components and manufacturing process isn’t as complicated as, say, the iPhone Flip, thanks in large part to Apple’s existing contracts with suppliers and manufacturing partners. Either way, it wouldn’t be a huge step for Apple to release the iPhone SE 4 at this point.
