Follow Bill Nye’s lead and use science to quell pro-lifers

With President Donald Trump taking office and threatening to reverse Roe v. Wade, the need to protect women’s reproductive rights is more urgent than ever. As other authors have pointed out, pro-life fanatics have the power of positive connotations on their side and use this advantage to undermine the legitimate arguments of pro-choice advocates.

I mean, who can claim to be against life? But as Bill Nye points out in an old video that has recently gained new relevance, equating a fertilized egg with an adult human fails to recognize the science behind conception.

In this video, you can see Nye explaining how frustrated he is about why abortion rights aren’t something we should be discussing in the first place. After briefly explaining how conception occurs, the science educator demonstrates how little our laws have to do with reason and logic.

Bill Nye: Can we stop telling women what to do with their bodies? | Thinking Big

“You can’t help but notice, and I’m not the first to notice, that there are a lot of cases where men of European descent pass these extraordinary laws based on ignorance,” he said. Furthermore, “this is just a reflection of deep science” there is a lack of understanding and it seems like you literally don’t know what you are talking about. ” We can only imagine how frustrated he, like all the other defenders of logic, is feeling right now.

Anti-abortion zealots are not usually keen on considering science or reason, but this video could sway those wary of violations of women’s rights. And while we shouldn’t need white men to explain why women’s rights are human rights, sadly few seem willing to listen to women’s pleas for respect. Despite the fact that the strict laws only affect women.

Still, Nye and other logic buffs are happy to hear from the pro-life crowd. If this argument really comes down to protecting children and not stripping women of their fundamental rights, then there are some worthwhile arguments to be made. For example, instead of focusing on the rights of unborn children, resources could be devoted to protecting already existing children. We take for granted that real, living children do not enjoy the same human rights as adults. This is an outdated way of thinking that leads children into harm’s way time and time again. By actively promoting global warming, we are also robbing today’s children of a reliable future.

Now, more than ever, it is essential to focus on the facts. By basing our courses of action on scientific evidence, we can respect each other’s beliefs without violating each other’s rights. It’s actually not that difficult. In The Science Guy’s own words. “Please think about this objectively. There are other problems to solve, people.”
