Russia’s unwarranted war of aggression against Ukraine has brought violent conflict back to our continent. This is why a new and first-ever European Defense Industrial Strategy has been proposed.Set A clear long-term vision for achieving defense industry readiness in the European Union. We need to have defense systems and equipment ready when we need them and in the quantities we need.
The strategy sets out several new actions to achieve this.
- Encourage EU countries to: Invest more, better, together and in Europe. This will be facilitated thanks to new programs to buy and collaborate more easily at European level.
- Create a European defense industry Stronger, more responsive, more innovative. Measures will also be taken to support research, encourage investment and address issues along the supply chain. As part of this, the Defense Innovation Agency will be opened in Kyiv.
- funding Ready Support the defense industry through a new European Defense Industry Program worth €1.5 billion and discuss defense needs for the next EU long-term budget
- collaborate with partners Around the world – for example, Ukraine will be able to participate in the EU’s defense industry program.
The strategy also sets several goals. By 2030, EU countries must:
- Cooperate to purchase at least 40% of defense equipment
- Spend at least half of the defense procurement budget on products made in Europe
- Trade at least 35% of defense goods between EU countries rather than with other countries
This will help make the EU safer and more resilient. It will not only benefit all of us in the EU, but also our key allies, including NATO and Ukraine.
