NEW YORK (WISH) – Indiana Fever star center Aliyah Boston has added another sentence to her already impressive resume.
USA Basketball announced Sunday that Boston will be included on the 2024 U.S. Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament team, which will be played this week in Antwerp, Belgium.
Boston has played for other American basketball teams, but this will be her first-team debut. She joins five-time Olympic champion Diana Taurasi, along with six other Olympians including Ariel Atkins, Nafeesa Collier, Jewell Lloyd, Kelsey Plumb, Brianna Stewart and Jackie Young . Sabrina Ionescu, Ryne Howard and Alyssa Thomas are also on the team.
Ionescu and Thomas, along with Atkins, Cooper, Lloyd, Plumb and Stewart, helped Team USA win gold at the 2022 Women’s World Cup.
Boston and her teammates will compete in the 2024 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament, which will be held from Thursday, February 8th to Sunday, February 11th.
The tournament will feature 16 teams competing in four different venues in Belgium, China, Brazil and Hungary. The top teams that survive the tournament will qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Team USA tied for the top seed based on the FIBA Women’s World Rankings in October. The U.S. women’s team will compete against the national teams of Belgium, Senegal and Nigeria. The first game will be against Belgium on Thursday at 2:45 p.m. Team USA will face Nigeria on Friday at 12:15 p.m., and finally against Senegal on Sunday at 1:15 p.m.
The top three teams from each qualifying tournament qualify for the Summer Olympics. Team USA has already earned a spot in Paris, as America is the current world champion.
The U.S. team is aiming for its ninth consecutive Olympic title in women’s basketball. According to USA Basketball, the final roster for the Summer Olympics is still under consideration.
The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics will be held on July 26th, and the competition will run until August 11th.
