Felix Tangawalima, a former referee and current senior referee instructor with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is rumoured to be planning to run in the highly anticipated election for president of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA).
Tangawalima’s name has become the latest to be floated as a possible candidate for the top job.
Household names such as Prophet Walter Magaya, former Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Twain Phiri and sportscaster Charles Mabika are already being talked about in football circles as possible candidates.
Also being mentioned as likely candidates are PSL side Simba Bola director Brighton “Punjap” Ushendibaba, Team Zimbabwe UK chief executive Marshall Gore and Caps United legend Alois Bunjira.
“Felix (Tangawalima) is interested in the Zifa chairmanship but everything is being kept secret,” a source told Standard Sport.
Attempts to get comment from Tangawalima himself were unfruitful.
He did not answer calls and had not yet responded to questions sent via WhatsApp at the time of publication.
As of now, these individuals remain rumours as they serve only Ushendibaba and have not officially or publicly declared their candidacy.
“Yes, it is true (I am interested in the top post),” Ushendibaba confirmed to The Standard two weeks ago.
The likely contenders have preferred to keep their cards close to home, in what could be seen as a calculated strategy.
He may have to wait a little longer before officially running as the Zifah Normalisation Committee, which currently oversees operations, continues to work on regularising the constitution for the electoral process.
