The preparations for next year’s Captain America: Brave New World have been somewhat unusual. Due to the current world situation, there are talks of reshooting or reworking some parts of the movie. And star Anthony Mackie has said that he misses his friends from The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and is sad that they won’t be in the movie.
Now, Marvel is gearing up for Captain America 4 and a new era for the character. That includes showing footage of the movie at CinemaCon, which somehow seems to get more news than Comic-Con these days. Here’s what we know:
- Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, played by Harrison Ford, speaks with Mackey’s Cap at the White House. Photos from EW are here:
- Given that Ross was recast from The Incredible Hulk, there are jokes about how different he looks now. “They said get rid of the mustache or lose the election,” Ross says.
- The idea here is that Mackie’s new Cap is tasked with reuniting the disbanded Avengers, but who exactly those members are is something the MCU and fans have been trying to answer for a long time. “Do your job. You’re not Steve Rogers,” Ross says.
- There, Isaiah Bradley, the aging super soldier last seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, hears a song that triggers the attack. Ross himself has been forced to fight, admitting that his “inner circle has been violated.”
That’s pretty much what I could tell from the video, and it seems that the audience who saw it also liked it. The film also stars Liv Tyler as Betty Ross and Time Break Nelson as the leader. It is expected to be released on February 14, 2025, unless the release date changes further.
The questions surrounding this movie are A) whether this new era of Captain America’s character will be able to effectively assemble the new Avengers, and who they will be, and B) whether Mackie as an actor will properly step into Chris’ shoes. There are many questions, such as whether it is possible. Evans will play this role and become a major force in the new MCU era, including the Fantastic Four and eventually the X-Men. Some people have doubts.

What about the new Avengers? That’s anyone’s guess at this point. Bruce is still the Hulk, but he’s been to space and now has a son. She-Hulk is coming, but her show has been cancelled. Shang-Chi has the potential to become a powerful new force. Thor is still kicking. Shuri is the new Black Panther. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man exists, but it could be “street level” in the future. It appears that characters like Ms. Marvel and Kate Bishop will be assigned to the JV Young Avengers team rather than the main unit. Everything feels so sky-high.
What about this particular movie? Marvel reportedly has no intention of abandoning this storyline after Jonathan Majors’ firing, but he will likely be replaced. I think they need someone to reunite the Avengers to make two more Avengers movies, so this could be the start.
