King Harald of Norway had returned from Malaysia on Sunday after falling ill while on holiday and being hospitalized for several days, the palace said.
Harald, who at 87 is Europe’s oldest monarch, was hospitalized on Tuesday after contracting an infection during a trip to Langkawi.
Palace announced on Saturday that he had been fitted with a “temporary” pacemaker, which his doctor said would make his return safer.
The palace said in a statement on Sunday that Harald would “soon depart for Langkawi airport for medical transport” and that Queen Sonia would accompany him.
“Upon arrival in Norway, His Majesty will be admitted to Rikshospitalet Hospital in Oslo,” the statement continued.
“His Majesty will be on sick leave for two weeks.”
A medical plane believed to be transporting the king took off from Langkawi island on Sunday afternoon after police escorted a convoy, including an ambulance, from the hospital to the airport, an AFP reporter saw.
Langkawi Air Traffic Control earlier told AFP that a Scandinavian Airlines medical plane was operating.
The SAS flight was scheduled to depart on Sunday.
According to the specialized site Flightradar, the flight is scheduled to land in Oslo at 22:59 pm Japan time.
Harald needs crutches to get around and has had a series of health problems in recent years.
He contracted a respiratory infection in January, days after denying speculation that he would follow in the footsteps of his distant cousin Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and abdicate.
During his absence, Crown Prince Haakon (50) assumed the position of regent.
