European travel strikes: flight and rail disruptions expected in March

Strikes occur regularly in Europe as workers put their work on hold to demand better pay and conditions.

Strikes can be planned months in advance, but they can also be announced at the last minute, so it always proves beneficial to check before you travel.

Italy: Milan faces public transport strike

Milan will face turmoil March 22 The city’s public transport workers are on a 24-hour strike affecting subways, buses and trams.

Strike hits Italian airport

Passengers using Verona’s Villafranca Airport March 23rd Air traffic controllers could face disruption if they go on strike.

The strike, scheduled to last from 10am to 6pm, coincides with a strike by Air Dolomiti cabin staff and could disrupt flights between Italy and Germany.

Italian state-owned railway company Ferrovi dello Stato (FS) is affected by a strike. March 23rd-24thcausing disruption to local, regional and long-distance trains.

The strike will begin on the night of March 23rd and last for 24 hours. Trenitalia and Trenord are severely affected but will operate on a guaranteed minimum schedule.

UK: Rail strikes in April and May

British railway workers are planning a series of one-day strikes in April over pay.

UK Border Force fears attack on Easter

The end of the Easter holidays could be disrupted and ruined by travel in the UK as Border Force agents threaten to leave.

PCS union members are being voted on for strike action in a dispute over working hours and conditions. The results of the vote are expected to be known on March 22nd, and a strike could take place by April 5th.

The strike could cause long queues and delays at London’s Heathrow Airport.

Germany: Train strike temporarily suspended as talks resume

Germany’s GDL trade union, which represents many of Germany’s train drivers, has resumed negotiations with national railway operator Deutsche Bahn after leaving the union on March 12.

This temporarily halted the ongoing railway strike in Germany.

France: 7-month strike notice could affect Paris Olympics

Disruptions are expected on Ile-de-France’s bus and metro networks as CGT-RATP announced a seven-month strike notice from February 5 to September 9.

Employees of the state-run public transport company claim they are quitting their jobs over pay. If no deal is reached, a strike could occur during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
