European travel strikes: flight and rail disruptions expected in March

Strikes occur regularly in Europe as workers put their work on hold to demand better pay and conditions.

Germany: Nationwide transport strike in March

German passenger trains hit by strike Thursday, March 7th.

The 35-hour strike is being carried out by the GDL Train Drivers Union after negotiations over wages and working hours failed. The impact on passenger service is expected to begin at 2 a.m. Thursday and continue until 1 p.m. Friday.

Unions have warned that unannounced strikes will become more common.

The industrial action follows a strike at local transport operators earlier this month led by trade union Ver.di.

Frankfurt cancels flights after Lufthansa strike

German air travel will also be affected by the strike March 7th-8th Lufthansa ground staff are leaving.

The disruption is expected to begin at 4 a.m. Thursday and last until 7 a.m. Saturday, with the possibility of flight delays and cancellations. Frankfurt Airport has canceled all departures for Thursday.

The labor union Ver.di is demanding a wage increase for its members. The next round of negotiations is scheduled to take place on March 13th.

Spain: Renfe train drivers strike canceled

Members of the Spanish Railway Drivers’ Union (SEMAF) called off a strike planned for March after reaching an agreement.

The multi-day strike was called for non-compliance with contract provisions regarding working hours and the freezing of plans to hire drivers. If that happens, Renfe trains across Spain will also be affected.

UK: Border Force attack threatened over Easter period

The end of the Easter holidays could be disrupted and ruined by travel in the UK as Border Force agents threaten to leave.

PCS union members are being voted on for strike action in a dispute over working hours and conditions. The results of the vote are expected to be known on March 22nd, and a strike could take place by April 5th.

The strike could cause long queues and delays at London’s Heathrow Airport.

Italy: Nationwide strike hits air and rail travel

Both public and private transport systems will be affected, leading to major travel disruptions across the country.

Passengers using Verona’s Villafranca Airport March 22 Air traffic controllers could face disruption if they go on strike.

The strike, scheduled to last from 10am to 6pm, coincides with a strike by Air Dolomiti cabin staff and could disrupt flights between Italy and Germany.

Train strikes in Italy in March

Italy’s national railway company, Ferrovi dello Stato (FS), will be hit by a strike from March 23rd to 24th, which could disrupt local, regional and long-distance train services.

The strike will begin on the night of March 23rd and last for 24 hours. Trenitalia and Trenord are severely affected but will operate on a guaranteed minimum schedule.

Additional national rail strikes March 13th Trains will be disrupted as track maintenance staff go on strike for eight hours.

France: 7-month strike notice could affect Paris Olympics

Disruptions are expected on Ile-de-France’s bus and metro networks as CGT-RATP announced a seven-month strike notice from February 5 to September 9.

Employees of the state-run public transport company claim they are quitting their jobs over pay. If no deal is reached, a strike could occur during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
