European Parliament calls for guaranteeing abortion rights for all Europeans following Renew Europe initiative
The European Parliament reaffirms today that the right to safe and legal abortion must be protected by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, when it adopts a resolution urging the Council to launch a Treaty Reform Convention. Renew Europe started calling for this charter change already two years ago, with the aim of giving all European women the right to decide about their bodies, wherever they are in the European Union. In recent years, the right to abortion, although not yet a right in all EU member states, has come under attack by far-right and populist conservative politicians, including in Poland, Hungary and the United States.
President of Renew Europe, Valerie Heyer Said:
“Women’s rights must never fall victim to populism. While Europe’s radical right is working hard to find new ways to push its reactionary agenda, we must stay at the forefront. We need to stand up and defend women’s rights more resolutely than ever. It’s time for the right to abortion to be enshrined in law for all Europeans. Your body, your rights.”
The resolution calls on Malta and Poland to immediately lift current bans and restrictions on abortion. It also calls on Member States to guarantee non-discriminatory access to the full range of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), including maternal and child health services, contraceptive methods and supplies, and sex education. Furthermore, health care providers must not refuse to provide medical services based on so-called conscience clauses.
