UK shadow foreign secretary calls for UK-EU security deal
david lamyBritain’s shadow foreign secretary said on stage at the Munich Security Conference that he wants a new security deal between the EU and Britain.
He said:
Of course, I hope there will be a general election this year and I can become UK Foreign Secretary. Because it is absolutely fundamental that the UK and Europe have the closest relationship and that the Brexit era is over. It’s resolved.
And what my party is proposing is a new EU-UK security agreement. And this agreement is effectively an agreement based on the fact that there is clearly a war going on here in Europe.
But the truth is that it’s important to call the courage of Alexei Navalny into the room – a reminder that if we don’t survive that war, Russia will be in trouble for months, years, maybe even more. It will continue to be a threat to Europe for generations.
It also means that Britain’s defense capabilities, particularly the intelligence capabilities of the Five Eyes system partnered with the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, alongside its French partner, which accounts for around 50% of Europe’s defense capabilities. It is absolutely essential, which is why we now need a new security agreement.
Now, that security agreement is not comparable to NATO, but rather runs parallel to NATO.
Ricarda LangThe co-chair of Germany’s Alliance 90/Green Party told the Munich Security Conference that he grew up with the idea of the end of history, but that has changed dramatically in recent years.
“For us as Europe, this is the question: How can we strengthen our democracies?” she said.
He said Europe needed to work more closely together domestically.
He stressed that the question of how to support Ukraine from a security perspective is “of paramount importance.” According to Lang, the question of whether democracy will prevail is related to whether Ukraine will prevail.
