NAIROBI — President William Ruto has dropped Kenyan candidate for the East African Community (EAC) Secretary-General post, Caroline Mweke, in a surprise move.
In her place, he suggested Veronica Mueni Nduba, the current Principal Secretary of State for Performance and Delivery Management in the Civil Service Department, to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Peter Matuki, who was appointed Ambassador to Russia. .
This decision was communicated to Deng Kuol, Chairman of the EAC Council of Ministers, in a letter signed by EAC Cabinet Secretary Penina Maronza.
However, the reason for the change in nomination has not been disclosed.
In a letter dated April 15 and obtained by Capital FM, Malonza said: “The Republic of Kenya now proposes the appointment of Veronica Mweni Nduba as Secretary-General of the East African Community.”
A virtual meeting of EAC ministers was scheduled for Tuesday to consider Kenya’s request, officials said.
The final decision rests with the summit, which will consider ministerial advice.
Despite Kenya’s proposed changes, some partner countries want Matuki to serve out his term, with some reports saying they want South Sudan to take over in 2026.
Kenya faces the challenge of gaining acceptance of the change of nomination from all partner countries, especially since Matuki has already been redeployed.
