The former director and CEO of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has been appointed director of the Institute of Medical Research (MRI).

Replying to a question by Ada Derana in this regard, Health Minister Dr Ramesh Pathirana explained that Dr Vijit Gunasekera was the Director of MRI before being appointed as CEO of NMRA.

Therefore, after being removed from his position within the NMRA, he was reappointed as Director of MRI, the Minister explained.

Meanwhile, senior scientist DD Bulathsinhala was appointed acting CEO of NMRA on November 9.

Dr. Vijit Gunasekera, former Director General and CEO of NMRA, was recalled to the Ministry of Health on November 7 following a court order banning him from traveling abroad.

On October 31, the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court held three persons, including the Director General (Supplies Division) of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Gunasekera, Dr. Kapila Wickramanayake, and the company owner, Sugarth Janaka Fernando alias ‘Aruna Deepti’, A travel ban was implemented. Involved in forging documents to import a substandard batch of human intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG).

The product is said to have been manufactured by Livealth Biopharma Pvt Ltd. in India and was imported by a local drug supply company called Isolez Biotech Pharma AG (Pvt) Ltd. However, the India-based manufacturer denies having anything to do with this. We have told NMRA that this is a fraudulent activity and that we do not manufacture, supply or export these products to any party.

It turns out that funds worth Rs 300 million have been raised. The illegal importation of 22,500 vials of IVIG resulted in the misappropriation of $130 million.
