Currently, the transaction notifications that appear after using tap to pay are managed by Google Play Services, but Google Wallet will soon take over.
While the Google Wallet app lives on the Play Store, much of the experience is powered by Play Services, including things like Google Pay notifications after an in-store purchase.
Today, I opened the Google Wallet app (on a few tablets without NFC) and was greeted with a card that read, “Don’t miss important updates: Get notifications on purchases, flight updates, and more.”
After allowing Google Wallet to send you notifications, if you go to the settings page within the app, you’ll notice that the previous “Notifications” section (“Confirm purchases” + “Updates about your passes”) has been replaced with a link to system settings.
Google Wallet for Android has six notification categories:
- Tips: Get helpful information to get the most out of Google Wallet.
- purchase: Review the transaction details after purchase.
- path: Get the latest information on events, flights and other passes.
- traffic: Stay up to date with transit activity.
- Updates and Alerts: Receive alerts about payment method issues, digital car keys, and more.
- Promotional Campaign: Get the latest information about promotional campaigns and their associated rewards and progress.
Something old and something new
One benefit of this new approach is that transaction notifications from your phone will now appear on Wear OS.
This prompt to enable Google Wallet notifications on your phone hasn’t appeared yet, but the company hinted last year that this was coming.
