As European Digital Identity (EUDI) wallets move closer to reality, organizations are trying to understand how the project and the new regulations surrounding it will impact their work.
The Center of Excellence for Data Sharing and Cloud (CoE DSC), an international data sharing initiative based in the Netherlands, has published a report on what a European digital identity means for the data space, including service providers and data sharing initiatives. A guide has been published.
The European Common Data Space is the continent’s attempt to create a single market for data, making more data available for economic, social and research use.
“Digital identity (DI) is a critical component of the data space,” the paper states. “In this dynamic environment, data spaces must adopt a strategic approach to remain agile and effective.”
The data space is set to benefit from an EU-wide digital identity that enables cross-sector data sharing and interoperability. Cooperation and partnership between data spaces, digital identity providers and regulatory bodies should be encouraged, the paper notes.
The CoE DSC provides an analysis of the upcoming eIDAS 2.0 regulation, which aims to introduce new trust services and regulate EUDI wallets for natural persons and “Organizational Digital Identity Wallets” (ODIW) for legal entities. It outlines several recommendations for organizations working in the data space, including the use of components and infrastructure created by eIDAS 2.0.
“Rather than reinventing the wheel, dataspaces need to explore opportunities to take full advantage of eIDAS2 capabilities as a common building block,” the report states.
In November, the European Parliament and the Council reached an agreement on eIDAS 2.0. The next step is to provide technical specifications for your wallet. Governments, banks and utility institutions need to start preparing now, as they will be obliged to accept EUDI wallets within just 24 months of the regulation being adopted, the report warns.
Other organizations have also published their own guides on EUDI wallets and the upcoming eIDAS, including Identity, a nonprofit organization focused on decentralized identity services, and identity verification company iDenfy.
