Apple claims new rumors from China have halted development of a foldable iPhone after a supplier’s display failed the company’s own rigorous testing standards.
According to Fixed Focus Digital, a technology vlogger based on Weibo in Guangdong province and with many Chinese fans, Apple has been testing rival foldable phones as part of its foldable device research and development process. This is believed to have been going on since 2016. .
At least one of the foldable devices Apple is said to be testing uses a Samsung display. Samsung is a major supplier of display panels used in Apple devices, and in the past he is known to have provided samples of foldable displays to Apple. Recent reports also claim that Samsung is integrating the expertise it has gained in manufacturing foldable devices since 2019 to enhance operational efficiency in anticipation of Apple’s first foldable product.
But the source of today’s rumor claims that Samsung’s latest folding panel “failed after a few days” under Apple’s rigorous internal testing, so Apple has no plans for the time being, at least until the display is finished. The entire project was put on ice until then. High standards can be met and developed.
According to a report from information Earlier this month, Apple announced that it is actively building at least two foldable iPhone prototypes after more than five years of research and development. The two iPhone prototypes are said to be foldable across the width like a clamshell, but they are not part of Apple’s 2024 or 2025 product roadmap. The report notes that the foldable iPhone could still be canceled if it doesn’t meet Apple’s standards.
Weibo accounts claiming to have received information about the suspension of the foldable project at Apple are of a largely unknown quantity and, as far as we know, Apple has no previous track record with rumors, so we are skeptical about their accuracy. Of course it will.
It’s also unclear whether the claims will affect Apple’s continued development of the foldable iPad. Apple is rumored to be more interested in such devices, with foldable options since users don’t expect to carry them around in their pockets and don’t have to meet the high durability requirements of an “iPhone.” It may be thicker than an iPhone.
Earlier this month, Korean outlet The Elec Apple is reportedly considering launching its first foldable device in the next few years, in the form of a 7- to 8-inch device that could eventually replace the 8.3-inch iPad mini.
