Last month, Apple announced a number of new changes to the App Store. Part of that is due to EU laws that require the company to open its platform to third-party app stores. As part of this, Apple has changed its stance on cloud gaming and can now provide access to multiple games in a single app.
This rule change is being implemented not only within the EU but also globally. Most of us thought this would be good news for a company like Xbox, which has always criticized Apple’s restrictions on cloud gaming. However, it turns out that Microsoft has no intention of taking advantage of this rule change just yet.
talk to The Verge, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer seems to have confirmed that the company’s strategy for iOS remains the same. Simply because there is no room to monetize cloud gaming on iOS. However, Spencer did not clarify this point, instead choosing to criticize Apple’s handling of digital market apps in the EU.

Spencer feels that Apple hasn’t done enough to make iOS open, even claiming that “iOS is going in the opposite direction in some ways.” PC gamers can purchase games from multiple storefronts including Steam, Epic, Microsoft, and GOG.
Spencer is understandably not happy with the way Apple has “opened up” iOS, and he’s not alone. Apple’s idea of giving third parties access to iOS includes maintaining control over which apps are allowed and receiving royalties from developers who distribute outside of the Apple App Store. .
Third-party marketplaces are also not allowed unless the developer can provide letters of credit totaling at least 1 million euros. This is one of the most Apple-like things I’ve ever seen.
If the problem is with the way Game Pass works on Android, it doesn’t really have anything to do with monetization. You either have a subscription or you don’t, and without a Game Pass Ultimate subscription, you don’t really get anything. You can’t actually buy anything or subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate in either the Game Pass app or the standalone Xbox app.
Before 2020, cloud gaming was prohibited on iOS. That meant things like Game Pass, Nvidia GeForce Now, and the late Google Stadia couldn’t be accessed on the iPhone or iPad. In 2020, Apple changed the rules to allow cloud gaming to exist on iOS, but not on the App Store. The developer had to provide his web app instead, and while it was effective, it wasn’t a very smooth or streamlined experience.
Also, given that Apple has admitted to disabling web apps in the EU in response to digital market laws, I think Microsoft would be more keen to offer an official Game Pass app on iOS. Sho. At the very least, to provide a more streamlined experience for Game Pass subscribers.
