DENVER (KDVR) — There are a lot of things that have gone up in price in recent years, and airfares out of Denver International Airport are higher than the national average.
The average cost of airfare at the nation’s 100 busiest airports increased by 29% between 2021 and 2023, according to a report by USA Today.
Meanwhile, DIA was among the top 25 airports with the highest increases in airfares, with prices increasing by about 36%.
Most of the airfare increases occurred in 2022. Data compiled by USA Today shows that not only were airfares flat overall in 2023, but nationally they fell by 1%.
DIA’s airfares exceed the national average
Airfares rose nationwide, but the increase was not uniform across the board.
DIA’s 36% increase means a regular ticket costs $95 more than two years ago, bringing the average airfare in 2023 to $361.
However, it wasn’t as bad as other airports. Few airports recorded the same 36% increase as Denver, but since 2021, 18 airports have seen increases of 38% or more.
Airfares increased the most between Minneapolis and St. Paul. Paul International Airport, the number of flights in 2023 increased by 48%, or $136, compared to his 2021.
Fares will drop at most airports in 2022
While airfares have generally increased since 2021, there was a period after that when prices were actually declining at most airports.
According to USA Today, between the second quarter of 2022 and the second quarter of 2023, the most recent quarter for which data is available, 61 of the 100 busiest airports experienced price declines and 39 Prices have increased at the airport.
Lowest priced flights flying from Westchester County Airport in White Plains, New York since 2022. There, airfares fell by nearly 11%, with the average airfare in 2023 dropping by $42.
Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky and Orlando International Airport in Florida were the next worst-declining airports since 2022, down 9.5% and 7%, respectively.

Despite the slight decline, airfares increased overall at all but three airports.
Hawaii was the only airport to see prices decline from 2021 to 2023, with Lihue down 6%, Kahului down 3%, and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport (Care Hall) down 2%.
