Five malicious apps with tens of thousands of downloads were removed by Google Play after a research company published a report on them.
These apps included the Anatsa banking Trojan, which targeted users in the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain. Initially, the app specifically targeted his Samsung users, but later became manufacturer independent.

Fake apps disguised as PDF or cleaner apps are designed to reach the top free charts and are more likely to be downloaded by unsuspecting users.
The Anatsa Trojan has a device takeover (DTO) feature that allows it to take over an infected device and perform actions on your behalf. They can steal sensitive information from your phone and initiate transactions on their own.
As mentioned above, the malicious app is no longer available on Google Play, but if it is already installed on your phone, you will have to remove it yourself.
To avoid falling prey to such apps in the future, before downloading an app, thoroughly check that it comes from a reputable developer. Another thing to check is the requested permissions, especially those related to accessibility services.
