Dawn Staley thinks Iowa’s Caitlin Clark needs a ring to be the GOAT

CLEVELAND — Caitlin Clark has shattered records during her illustrious four-year career, but she has sparked much debate as to whether she is, in fact, the GOAT of women’s college basketball. .

Clark became the all-time leading scorer in Division I history, male or female, earlier this season, but Staley believes that title belongs to former Union University standout Brenna Stewart.

It’s hard to argue with her.

Stewart won four consecutive championships at UConn from 2012 to 2016 (the last time the NCAA won back-to-back championships on the women’s side) and earned Most Valuable Player honors in each championship. . She became the first woman to win the MOP Award four times.

South Carolina Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley and Iowa Hawkeyes guard Caitlin Clark pose for a reaction after being named AP Coaches and Players of the Year.

University of South Carolina coach Dawn Staley, herself a great college player who never won a championship during her career from 1988 to 1992 at the University of Virginia, solidified the tradition and became a GOAT topic. They agreed that they needed to win the title in order to join.

Follow the madness: NCAA basketball brackets, scores, schedules, teams, and more.

“I was really good in college, but I never won a championship,” said Staley, who led the University of Virginia to three Final Four appearances in 1991, losing the only national championship he played in. Told. That’s personal (my opinion). Like you’ve had a great career. But as always, did we win the championship? ”

Clark said Saturday that she doesn’t measure her success by whether she gets a ring.

“I don’t think so at all,” Clark said. “I’ve been playing basketball for four years at this university, and whether or not I’m going to have two games left depends on whether I’m proud of myself and the way I live and the way I do things.” I don’t think that’s a fair assessment, although I have had an impact on people’s lives.

“I don’t want my legacy to be, ‘Oh, Kaitlyn won X amount of games, or Kaitlyn scored X number of points.’ That’s what I was able to do for the game of women’s basketball.” I hope so, and I hope that it inspires young boys and young girls to dream of playing this sport and what they want to do in life.

“To me, when the time is reduced to 40 minutes and you can validate yourself within 40 minutes, I don’t think that’s a fair assessment.”

With all of this in mind, Staley believes that if Clark wins the championship with another surprising win over the Shamcocks on Sunday, she will be in the GOAT conversation considering all of her other accomplishments. I know it will happen.

“I mean, she’s just really great,” Staley said of Clark. “But winning the championship will seal her deal.

“Dear Lord, I hope she doesn’t.”
