Data shows Apple doesn’t have to worry about getting Android users to switch to iOS

According to data compiled by According to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, LLC (CIRP), the percentage of iPhone buyers who switched from an Android smartphone to an iPhone in the past five years ranged from 11% to 15%. In 2023, 13% of iPhone buyers switched from Android to iOS, which was 2 percentage points lower than the 15% who switched the previous year. Apple relies on current iPhone owners to generate growth

In the early days of the iPhone and Android, Apple tried to “persuade” Android users more aggressively. But Apple then used so-called “walled gardens” to try to get Android users to jump to iOS. A great example of this is the iOS Messages app. This app does not provide Android users with the same experience as iOS users when sending messages to other iOS users. The strategy worked to some degree, though Android users who wanted the coveted blue bubble when sending messages on iOS had to switch to iPhones.

But now Android users are looking beyond the blue bubble and can receive the same high-quality images, get read receipts, see input indicators, and enjoy end-to-end encryption from iOS users. I would like to do so. This will become a reality later this year when Apple announces support for Rich Communication Services (RCS). However, given the data CIRP presented us, this probably won’t hurt Apple’s iPhone sales too much.

Apple seems to understand that current iPhone users are what butters its bread. As a result, Apple should continue to stick to upgrades that allow sharing of data and photos among his iPhone users. A good example of this is the NameDrop feature added in iOS 17. This feature allows two girlfriend iPhone users to exchange contact information by bringing their phones close together.
