Data science skills are in high demand as organizations seek more from their data. This has led universities to get creative with how they structure their graduate data science programs.
One way universities are getting creative is by launching online programs, such as the Master of Science in Data Science (MDS) program that started a year ago at the University of California, San Diego.
Co-developed by the university’s Khalicioglu Data Science Institute and Department of Computer Science and Engineering, MDS allows students to connect with professors and staff through email, discussion boards, and video conferencing.Program takes a minimum of 2 years

Home to the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), UCSD attracts top talent, many of whom reside on faculty. MDS courses are taught by the same professors and researchers who teach in-person classes at UCSD.
“All classes are designed to be mostly asynchronous, so working adults can actually attend classes on their own timeline,” said David Danks, professor in the HDSI and UCSD Department of Philosophy. says.
UCSD is currently accepting applications for Fall 2024. The priority deadline is March 15th and the final deadline is June 5th. More information is available here.
Another school that offers an online master’s program in data science is the University of Pittsburgh. The school announced in December that it would partner with Coursera to offer the program, and registration began Monday. The course costs $20,000 and takes a minimum of 20 months to complete.
What makes Pitt’s School of Computing and Information (SCI) master’s degree program a bit unusual is that it’s open to anyone with a bachelor’s degree in any subject. SCI Dean Bruce Childers says doing so should help attract people to the program who might otherwise avoid it.

It’s unclear how many accredited universities offer online master’s programs in data science. Fortune has a list of 23 schools, and his website for Master of Data Science lists over 35 programs. However, neither the UCSD program nor the Pitt program is listed on his website for the Master of Data Science, which is sponsored by edX (an online learning program created by MIT and Harvard University in 2012). The actual number is much higher.
