German authorities said Tuesday that a former member of an armed group suspected of taking part in a series of robberies has been arrested after more than 30 years on the run.

Daniela Klett, 65, was arrested in her Berlin apartment on Monday afternoon. Investigators said they were led to her by a tip they received from the public in November, but did not provide further details. Lower Saxony’s chief of criminal police, Fried de Vries, told reporters that Klett, who had a foreign passport under an alias, did not resist. Her identity was determined with the help of her fingerprints. De Vries said a subsequent search of her apartment found a magazine large enough for her handgun and two rounds of ammunition, but no weapon was found.

Klett is one of three former Red Army faction members that police have been searching for for years. She, Ernst-Volker Staub, and Burkhard Gerweg are accused of being involved in 12 robberies and attempted murders in northern Germany between 1999 and 2016.

Authorities suspect the motive for the robbery was not political, but rather to finance an underground lifestyle. De Vries said a second arrest was made on Tuesday, but the man’s identity remains unknown. Klett was taken to the northern town of Verden, where a judge ordered her to be held until she is charged with six robberies between 1999 and 2016, most at the end of that period. It happened to me.

Prosecutor Clemens Eimterbaumer told a news conference in Hanover that Klett had not yet responded to the case, but that his identity was not in dispute. Her office’s investigation does not target suspected terrorist crimes related to members of her Red Army faction.

The Red Army faction was born out of the German student movement against the Vietnam War. The group launched a violent campaign against what its members saw as US imperialism and capitalism’s oppression of workers. The group killed 34 people and injured hundreds more. Investigators said they do not yet know where Klett has been in recent years, whether she was in Germany or how long she was in her Berlin apartment.

Mr de Vries said: “For many years we have asked ourselves how we could successfully live underground for 30 years.Of course, we knew we would get the answer when we spoke to Mr Klett. “I’m looking forward to it, and of course I’m hoping for that.” Three former Red Army faction members were included in Europol’s list of Europe’s most wanted in 2020. In mid-February, law enforcement officials issued a new request for information about the popular TV crime show. Lower Saxony’s Justice Minister Katherine Wahlmann said after the show: “This success shows very clearly that perpetrators can never rest, no matter how far back their actions may be.” said.
