Dakota Johnson headlines her own ‘Mobius’

I wish a psychic had warned us about these disastrous Spider-Man spin-offs.

If you think Morbius is terrible, choose Madame Web. Directed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones), this psychological thriller (★1/2/4, rated PG-13, in theaters now) is set in Jared Leto’s quasi-vampire film. He has barely cleared the painfully low hurdle.

Dakota Johnson plays a New York City EMT who can see the future. While she makes a valiant attempt to step outside of the drama’s comfort zone, she and others unfortunately find themselves caught in the film’s web of nonsense.

Kathy Webb (Dakota Johnson, center) races through New York City to keep Anya Corazon (Isabella Merced), Julia Cornwall (Sidney Sweeney) and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O'Connor) safe . "Madame Web."

This movie focuses on Cassandra Webb (Johnson), an elderly blind woman who is placed on a life support machine in Marvel Comics’ “Into the Spider-Verse,” but in this film, Spider-Man’s light The story depicts the origin story of a superhero. Cassie is a paramedic whose near-death experience unleashes strange psychic visions that she initially thinks are episodes of déjà vu but are actually glimpses of a potential future. And mostly hides herself and her cat. (This is also important to know; just like Peter Parker’s, her spider bite is key to Cassie’s story.)

“Madame Web”:Dakota Johnson talks about what makes famous parents make decent superheroes

By fate, or a forced plot so to speak, Cassie’s life becomes intertwined with three young people, Julia (Sidney Sweeney), Mattie (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya (Isabella Merced), who are killed by a strange man. She “witnessed” this. Ezekiel (Tahar Rahim). After saving the girls from being murdered on her subway, Cassie must decipher her own traumatic past while defending her bumbling new charges from this mysterious villain. . Despite Spidey not actually appearing (yet) in this story set in 2003, Ezekiel inexplicably wears what appears to be a Spider-Man suit, much to the annoyance of casual moviegoers. , would only confuse you.

Given the largely unexplained race of mythical spider people, Cassie’s haphazard visions, and comical denouement, the frustrating indignities are akin to “Madame Web.” Johnson gives her character a sassy gruffness with her more grounded side, who is totally bad at playing the cool aunt to her three troubled kids. .

“The worst time of my life”:Dakota Johnson didn’t like appearing on ‘The Office’

Mysterious Ezekiel (Tahar Rahim) targets and kills three young women "Madame Web."

The superhero stuff hasn’t been all that successful, and it’s not as subtle about the Spider-Sauce material. Cassie learns about great power and responsibility, and her ambulance partner Ben (Adam Scott) is about to become an uncle, so you don’t have to figure out some things. Must be a card-carrying Marvel geek.

And for fans of tight costumes and superpowers, “Madame Web” couldn’t come at a worse time, as the latest entry in a film genre with declining profits. This doesn’t help. “Madame Web” isn’t a breath of fresh air akin to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies, but instead reminds us of the worst superhero era (aka the mid-2000s) that we couldn’t escape. “Spider-Man 3,” “Elektra” and “X-Men: The Last Stand” are underperforming.

If only someone had seen it coming.
