February is in full swing today as severe winter weather hits parts of the United States and Valentine’s Day brings love. Also in the news: Until this week, the House had not impeached a Cabinet member in nearly 150 years. President Joe Biden has denounced former President Donald Trump’s threat not to support North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies as “un-American.”

🙋🏼‍♀️ I am nicole farato, Author of Daily Briefing. Will you be giving up something for Lent?

Here’s the news you need to know on Wednesday.

Today is the day of love (whatever it is)

Valentine’s Day falls on Wednesday, and lovers around the world exchange flowers and cards to celebrate their love. They say you can’t buy love, but on this day it’s getting more and more expensive. Americans will spend about $25.8 billion on the holidays this year. But high spending doesn’t guarantee romance. Let’s be honest, Valentine’s Day can be a little tough. Some may remember the breakup or death of a loved one, or feel like the world is judging them for being single (even if you’re perfectly happy that way). . If you’re planning on having an anti-Valentine’s Day this year, here are all the best ways to not celebrate.

Nor’easter brings the heaviest snow to New York in two years

New York City is bearing the brunt of a powerful nor’easter storm that brought heavy snowfall to the city, with tourists riding through snowflakes in Times Square. Hundreds of flights were canceled at LaGuardia Airport. Snowplows were dispatched for the first time in two years. New York state public schools, which have moved classes online for 1.1 million students, reported widespread logon issues Tuesday morning. This was the first test of the remote system since the nation’s largest public school district adopted a snow-free day policy in which students attend classes remotely in lieu of recess. read more

What are House Republicans’ case against Mayorkas?

The core allegation against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, which House Republicans have long sought to impeach, is that he knowingly and willfully allowed the crisis at the southern border to reach an extreme. But Democrats, a few Republicans, and legal scholars across the political spectrum argue that House Republicans’ accusations amount to little more than policy disagreements over immigration. Skeptics of the effort have also expressed concern that Mayorkas’ impeachment could have a ripple effect and politicize future impeachments. read more

President Biden condemns President Trump’s NATO threat

President Joe Biden strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s threat not to assist NATO members under attack by Russia and urges House Republicans to follow the Senate’s lead and immediately approve funding to Ukraine. Ta.

Six years after the Parkland shooting, school librarians are working to make their spaces safer

Six years after the day everything changed, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School library is filled with resources to promote mental health. Diana Hanneski, a 63-year-old librarian who received this year’s national I Love My Librarian award for her public service, credits this escapism and emotional support for herself and her students. I think it’s essential. Six years ago, on Valentine’s Day 2018, the high school students who survived the mass shooting on a campus in Parkland, Florida, have graduated. But Haneski and about half of the staff from the massacre remain, along with children who were in middle school and elementary school when a former student opened fire, killing 17 people and injuring 17 others. read more
