Conspiracy theorists said Tuesday that the Baltimore bridge collapse was the result of a deliberate attack, even though officials immediately said there was no evidence of that.
Hours after a container ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge, plunging vehicles and people into a frigid U.S. port, users on X and other platforms blamed everything from terrorists to Israel.
Among the most widely circulated posts was by influencer Andrew Tate, who told X’s 9 million followers that the 300-metre vessel had “suffered a cyberattack.”
“The lights went out and I deliberately steered towards the bridge supports,” said the American-born Brit. “Foreign agents of the United States are attacking our digital infrastructure. Nothing is safe.”
InfoWars founder Alex Jones claims the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax, faces multiple defamation lawsuits, and reposted the allegations.
“It looks intentional to me,” he said. “There is a possibility of a cyber attack. World War III has already begun.”
The cause of the collapse was not immediately confirmed, but Baltimore Police Chief Richard Worley said there were no signs of terrorism.
Video footage showed the ship going dark twice shortly before the collision, and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said at a news conference Tuesday that “the crew alerted authorities to a power issue.”
Moore added that officials had not seen any “credible evidence of a terrorist attack.” Bill Del Bagno, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Baltimore field office, also said there was no evidence of terrorism.
Despite these assurances, the flood of rumors about X continues, with some accounts linking the tragedy to the United States’ abstention in the UN Security Council vote for an immediate ceasefire in the war in Gaza.
“Did Israel just attack the US yesterday for not using its veto??” one account said in a post that had thousands of interactions.
Some blamed the bridge collapse on the Islamic State group, which has become a hot topic ahead of the U.S. presidential election, and corporate diversity efforts, but the most conspiratorial pages contained hints of a “false flag.” was written.
Synergy Marine Group, the Singapore-flagged Dali container ship’s manager, said two pilots from the Port of Baltimore were operating the vessel at the time of the collision and that the cause of the crash had not yet been determined. There were no injuries to the crew.
