Britain has been urged by its allies in the European Union to consider reinstating conscription amid growing fears of World War III. Latvia’s foreign minister believes Britain could help Europe’s defense efforts against Russia if it reintroduced national service.
Kryjanis Kalins made the proposal as Ukraine enters its third year of conflict with Russia. “I think it’s a very good idea for us and I think other NATO allies could consider it as well,” he told Sky News.

Cullins added: “The purpose of conscription is to strengthen a capable, equipped and trained reserve force. It does not replace a professional military. It augments a professional military.” .
British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps told Sky News at the Munich Security Conference that Britain has a highly trained and professional military and there are no plans to change this.
He said: “We have a professional army made up of professional troops. It is very important that they are trained to the highest possible standards.”
“Everyone knows that in wartime, World War I, World War II scenarios, of course countries have to make different arrangements.”
He ruled out conscription, adding: “That’s not the position we’re in right now. There are no plans to conscript at the moment. So it’s not something that’s on the table right now.”
