Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy is 2-8 against Academy of Career & Exploration since March 2017, but will have a chance to close the gap a bit on Monday. Cobalt Mathematics and Science Academy will take on the Career & Exploration Eagles in front of their home fans at 3:15 p.m. Both teams will enter this contest with a focus on winning their previous games.
Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy certainly had a tough battle last Friday, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 victory over Academy for Academic Excellence. With this victory, Cobalt Academy of Mathematics and Science achieved back-to-back championships.
Matthew Avila made a huge impact wherever he played. He pitched five innings on the mound, allowing only one earned run (three earned runs) on six hits. Avila has not allowed more than two walks in six consecutive innings pitched, which is nothing short of reliable. Avila was also solid in the batter’s box, going 2-for-2 with a stolen base.
In other batting news, Donovan Davis had a great performance with 1 hit in 2 at-bats and 1 stolen base. He’s been great when it comes to stealing bases, with at least one steal in each of his last three games.
Meanwhile, Academy of Career & Exploration defeated Silver Valley 6-1 on Thursday.
Like the Cobalt Institute of Math & Science Academy, the Academy of Careers & Exploration also had a great game from two-way player Silas Urtiaga. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 12 batters in seven innings and giving up only one earned run (and only one walk) on four hits. Urtiaga was also very active at the plate, recording one hit in four at bats, a triple, one run, and an RBI.
In other hitting news, the team relied heavily on Robbie Mazzarese, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two stolen bases.
Cobalt Mathematics and Science Academy’s victory ends a seven-game home drought dating back to last season, moving them to 2-11. As for Academy of Careers & Exploration, they currently have a winning record of 5 wins and 4 losses.
Cobalt Mathematics and Science Academy couldn’t quite put an end to Career & Exploration Academy when the teams last played against each other in April 2023, losing 8-6.
