ChromeOS 126 brings AI-powered digital webcam zoom and seamless Android setup to Chromebooks

summary

  • The ChromeOS 126 update brings improved webcam functionality and accessibility tools for users with low vision or light sensitivity.
  • The new Android Setup feature connects your Chromebook and smartphone to the same Wi-Fi.
  • ChromeOS now supports multi-calendar view with Google Calendar.

There’s Microsoft’s Windows, Apple’s macOS, and Google’s version of the computer-based operating system. This lightweight OS offers a completely different computing experience than resource-hungry OSes, and for unique hardware products, the purchase price is often much lower. Google’s laptop OS (named ChromeOS after the Google Chrome web browser) sees new updates rolled into its live channel every month, and June is no exception. ChromeOS 126 includes a handy startup wizard and improved webcam capabilities, in addition to adding some handy accessibility features.

The easiest way to keep your Chromebook up to date

According to Google’s latest update log for ChromeOS 126, the latest version will be rolling out to all currently supported Chromebooks in the coming days, as per usual. Once downloaded, users can try out the new digital zoom feature on Chromebook webcams with AI-based Super Resolution. Going forward, ChromeOS’ Camera app will support zooming on all built-in Chromebook webcams, even those without optical zoom. Google’s AI tools will enhance digitally zoomed images on some “high-performance” Chromebooks. Additionally, new Chromebook buyers will be able to seamlessly set up their laptops with Android smartphones when both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network, and Google Calendar will add multi-calendar support.

ChromeOS 126 adds a variety of features beyond just the AI features (which were a big part of the previous ChromeOS update). For people with visual impairments, Google added a tool that lets Magnifier follow “select and speak” text. People with light sensitivity can turn off the blinking text cursor, helping to prevent seizures in certain people. Finally, users can now turn off the swipe-to-move gesture motion (also known as overscroll).

ChromeOS is a great tool for students and anyone who wants to simplify their computing life, but its open software makes it fun for power users too. It’s not hard to switch between Stable, Beta, and Dev channels on ChromeOS, but be careful because switching to the Dev channel can introduce bugs that aren’t present in the stable build. If you have an old Windows laptop or MacBook lying around, you can breathe new life into it by installing ChromeOS Flex, or buy one of the best Chromebooks of 2024 and take advantage of ChromeOS 126’s new Android setup features.
