summary

  • Google is introducing a new feature to Chrome for Android to automatically manage open tabs.
  • The feature is called “Android Tab Declutter” and will be available in Chrome 125, which is expected to be released by May.
  • Meanwhile, picture-in-picture mode in custom tabs makes it easy to multitask while browsing in Android apps that use Chrome’s rendering engine.

If you’re concerned about your mobile device’s battery and memory usage, you might want to keep track of which apps are open. You already know how quickly your tabs can add up depending on how often you use Chrome. For example, even if you don’t really care about memory consumption, you might want to keep everything organized. Specifically, Google plans to roll out new features for its browser to reduce tab usage.

Browsers are rolling out support for picture-in-picture mode in custom tabs

As spotted by Chrome Story’s code detectives, Google is rolling out the following features to Chrome on Android: Organize your Android tabs. As you might have guessed, this is designed to help you better manage your open tabs. When enabled, the browser automatically archives or deletes inactive tabs. At this time, it is unclear whether you can choose to archive or delete tabs. However, you may be able to see which tabs remain open in Chrome even after they’ve been archived (via 9to5Google ). The feature is expected to go live in Chrome 125, if officially announced by Google, and could be released by May.

Google continues to focus on addressing tab overload

Tabs can quickly become overwhelming, but you may not necessarily need to close them all, especially when you’re digging deep. With this in mind, Google recently rolled out a feature to his Chrome on Android that enables picture-in-picture when browsing in other apps. You can collapse so-called custom tabs into floating panes by tapping the new chevron icon in the browser window that appears when you open a web link in an app that uses Chrome’s rendering engine. From here, you can navigate his website within the display while keeping the website icon, title, and domain visible.

While these features seem trivial, they have added up over time, and Chrome users now have a wide range of organizational tools available to them. The more Google improves Chrome, the better its chances of gaining a competitive edge in a crowded browser market.
