1st place was a perfect score

Students from across the county participated in the Lawrence County Science Fair on Feb. 8, and a reception was held Monday at Ohio University Southern to announce the winners and present them with trophies.

The first place winner at the event was Chesapeake Middle School’s Keegan Robinson’s project “Just Breathe — Is Vest Best?”

In announcing the award, Gretta Taylor, student services supervisor for Lawrence County ESC, which organizes the fair, said Robinson was the first athlete in the fair’s history to receive a perfect score from the judges.

Robinson, a sixth-grader who said it was his first time competing in the competition, said he was “shocked” but “happy” when he learned he had come first.

Robinson was part of Chesapeake Middle School’s overwhelming victory, earning top four overall awards at the fair.

ThThe students received support from the district’s school board, whose members attended the ceremony to celebrate the victory.

Second place went to Indi Hutchinson for “The Big Bubble Experiment,” and third place went to Braedon Teague for “Which Milk Spoils the Fastest?”

Mr. Teague explained his project, which follows the format of the contest: conducting experiments using the scientific method.

“I drank three different types of milk and let it sit for a week and a half,” he said.

He then observed them for signs of decay.

“I smelled them and looked for differences in color and appearance,” he says. Said.

Teague said he hypothesized that whole milk would spoil first.

“It usually lasts five to seven days,” he said, noting that the results of the experiment are consistent with the hypothesis.

Like Robinson, he said he is new to the sport.

“This is my first time, but it feels very good,” he said of winning one of the top trophies.
